El Mirage and the Flood Control District of Maricopa County recently celebrated the dedication and official opening of the Lower El Mirage Wash Basin located at the southwest corner of Cactus and El Mirage roads.
Maricopa County Flood Control District partnered with the city to design and ultimately build a 24-acre passive park and retention basin in El Mirage.
“The once rough-graded eyesore that had standing water after storms, attracted illegal dumping, and presented a significant nuisance to our community was transformed into a space that not only protects us from flooding, but gives us an additional area to enjoy,” said Mayor Lana Mook.
Supervisor Clint Hickman stressed the importance of the flood basin and said: “The integrated design of the wash marries engineering and landscape architecture throughout the process. Aesthetic and multiple use elements were developed in concert with the safety requirements for 100-year flood protection.”
