New Sun City Beautification Project Complete
Sun City PRIDES and MCDOT team up to save water and “beautify” Sun City

Sun City, AZ — The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and the Sun City PRIDES celebrated the completion of the Del Webb Boulevard Landscape Conversion Project, the first of several planned Sun City Beautification projects, during a special ribbon-cutting celebration held this morning in front of the newly renovated roadway median located just north of Bell Road.

“Our goal is to bring some life and color back into our community,” said Ken Smith, chairman of the SC PRIDES Beautification Committee that spearheaded the median landscape conversion. “This partnership shows we can do a lot by working together.”

Last month, MCDOT crews removed several aging ornamental citrus trees lining the roadway median and center drainage channel on Del Web Boulevard between Palmeras Drive and 107th Avenue. The work was performed in advance preparation of a water-saving landscape conversion and community beautification project in partnership with MCDOT, the Sun City PRIDES and Linden Tree Nursery.

Linden Tree Nursery provided the landscape design and the Sun City PRIDES Beautification Committee furnished the new water-conserving plantings paid for by community donations. PRIDES volunteers worked alongside MCDOT maintenance crews to plant them early last month. The new landscape conversion project features water-conserving xeriscaping that integrates rocks and desert-tolerant plants and shrubbery into the landscape.

As part of the transformation project, MCDOT crews installed a new watering system, converting from flood irrigation to water-conserving bubble sprinklers at the base of plants.

“This project could result in significant water savings for our community,” said Clint Hickman, District 4 County Supervisor. “We anticipate an immediate 50 percent reduction in water use with the new drip irrigation system.”
